The Kilmartin Glen is one of Scotland’s most incredible landscapes, with layers of history stretching back thousands of years. The modern mind boggles at the array of ancient monuments dotted around the valley and the surrounding hills – petroglyphs, standing stones, stone circles, burial cairns, and medieval crosses and castles give evidence of the people who have moved through.
We understand a great deal, but Mystery still pervades the Glen in the form of the many questions left unanswered… What do the symbols carved into the stones really mean? What ceremonies were carried out, and who are the people who were buried here?

A friend and I stayed in a B&B in the Kilmartin Valley, across from a field with stones and sheep. We sheltered as best we could under the stones during a rain shower. Magic and mystery, indeed.
